The primary topic discussed last week was the question of whether or not we should continue to offer formal and informal traffic handling or something in between all or none.

There was wide diversity of opinion, but Joe, WA7JAW presented a scenario that received a unanimous vote of approval. At a high level, Joe commented that in a sense we are talking about a solution in search of a problem, especially if we eliminate routine formal traffic from the picture (of which we have next to none anyway). What’s left is “no big deal” and it avoids having to make big changes to the mission of the OEN.

Specifically, we will:

• Not accept routine formal traffic (Happy Birthday, Congratulations on new license or upgrade, Etc.).
• Accept routine informal traffic messages (please phone my spouse and let her know that I arrived at the camping spot, Etc.).
• Do what we can to help out in emergency situations.
• Encourage passing other traffic through the GBN, WARTS, or CBN nets.
